Jason McGillvray, LCSW
WellSpace Clinician (He/Him)
Jason approaches individual psychotherapy sessions from a primarily psychodynamic framework, working collaboratively to recognize and analyze emotional and relational patterns in the lives of clients, and focusing on the ways that early relationship dynamics continue to shape our relationships in the present. Identifying and working through both conscious and unconscious defensive processes is integral to Jason's work, and is critical to the process of developing insight into our maladaptive behaviors. He believes in the clinical efficacy of both sitting with and validating complex emotions, and also endeavors to create an environment that challenges the client to explore their own role in their relational and behavioral struggles.
Jason also incorporates elements of cognitive behavioral work to conduct non-pathologizing and goal-oriented sessions framed around the client's needs and relationships. His sessions with both teens and adults often revolve around relational challenges, neurodivergence, struggles with substance use, emotional burnout, processing grief, and coping with major life and lifestyle adjustments. He believes that the relationship between the client and therapist is the single most significant harbinger of change in therapy, and is central to achieving sustainable clinical progress that extends beyond the lifespan of the therapeutic relationship. Finally, he believes that mental health is an ongoing practice of developing insight and metacognition, and that lasting change comes from a mutual investment in the process from both the therapist and client.
